Xenophobia is the irrational fear and destruct of that which is perceived to be foreign or strange, the #saynotoxenophobia movement started after foreigners felt that they were being discriminated against and that they should go back to where they came from.
Makwerekwere is what they would call them, that name is not only hurtful to foreigners but demeaning, its discriminating them based on their values and culture, the #saynotoxenophobia started when foreigners were burnt, beaten and even killed because of the stereotype that went around because South Africans felt that their jobs were being taken away from them and that foreigners are bringing negativity around different places they reside in.
The videos and pictures of cruel behavior towards the whole situation involving foreigners went viral on social media networks, video of men being burnt and beaten badly, the use of social media brought the attention to other different people across cultures as to how bad this situation was, it was pure inhuman and the disregard of other peoples ways of living.
This also brought the negative attention to our nation, we have different investors across the world who would be afraid to invest, because they would feel afraid of being attacked, tourists as well who would not want to visit our country, the use of social media brought a negative publicity for those who saw the videos across the world, this also affected our economy negatively as investors withdrew their investments
The use of social media regarding this movement was portrayed in a negative way as well as others condemning this kind of behavior, due to the fact that different platforms of social networks were sharing videos that brought and distress to other people, disregarding other families feelings of how they would receive their loved ones death, as well as being in support of the movement, defending these hardworking people,as social media should be used in a sense of bringing positivity to others and not hurt people or be insensitive to their feeling

The series of xenophobic attacks that took place in our country put an undesirable spotlight on South Africa in the eyes of the rest of the world. One can say that social media helped a lot to expose the cowards who took part in these attacks and forced SA's not to turn a blind eye to the cruelty that took place.
ReplyDeletei agree, because if it was not for social media, the events would not have touched a lot of people and they would not have seen the severe damage of what occurred, so it helped a lot

ReplyDeleteThe #saynotoxenophobia has influenced the use of social media in a positive way because people started to share pictures of the violence, and that lead to the movement of stopping the hatred against one another to be initiated in that case the hashtag has played a huge role in sending out awareness about how important it is to unit together as one.
ReplyDeletetrue, social media plays a very huge role in our daily lives, it keeps up updated about what is going on around us, and that we as well take initiative regarding the movement
Deletexenophobia is not a good thing. we need to love each other and we also need to know that we all Africans.let us not discriminate each other.
ReplyDeletewe definitely do, we cannot discriminate each other based on our skin type and just that other people are working harder that others, it is indeed not fair, we are all equal and we seek jobs in different way, just that some are not picky in what they do
DeleteThe #saynotoxenophobia had an impact to people to people who were against xenophobia. South Africans need to see foreign nationals as people, human beings who strive for similar values, safety and livelihoods.
ReplyDeletetrue, we definitely need to look out for each other, to help one another and to emphasize good communication skills, so that we do not assume that others are here to steal out jobs, but it can be beneficial because they contribute to our economy as well as create job opportunities
